The principal aim of religious education is to explore what people believe and what difference this makes to how they live, so that pupils can gain the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to handle questions raised by religion and belief, reflecting on their own ideas and ways of living.’ RE Today, 2019.
At Bassetts Farm, we wish for children to develop the skills and knowledge that they need to access opportunities, responsibilities and experiences later in life. We do this through underpinning the teaching and learning with the Devon and Torbay Agreed Syllabus.
We aim for RE within school to:
- Contribute dynamically to children and young people’s broad and balanced curriculum by provoking challenging questions about meaning and purpose in life, beliefs about God, ultimate reality, issues of right and wrong and what it means to be human.
- Enable all children to access learning about religions and beliefs in local, national and global contexts.
- To reflect our local context by building and maintaining links with local religious organisations to allow children to consider how their understanding of beliefs contributes to how they live their own lives.
- To broaden all children’s understanding of differing beliefs and faiths and understand the significance of this in the world that we live in today enabling them will develop an appreciation of human creativity and achievement.
- To address social disadvantage by all children having access to high quality teaching, a range of religious resources and artefacts, wide range of visitors and trips and developing critical thinking skills that are used across the curriculum.
- To ensure that all children achieve at least good standard and strive to excel.
The RE curriculum is coherently planned sequences that to build on skills and prior knowledge and understanding of religions and beliefs. This will enable children to make links in their learning of religions, draw conclusions and reflect upon this knowledge and consider how this impacts the way that they live their lives.
