Reading
Reading is the cornerstone to learning and a love of reading stays with us through life. At Bassetts Farm, we place great emphasis on reading, through teaching phonics, enjoying guided reading sessions and giving the children a wide range of books and materials to devour.
There are six key elements to our reading curriculum:
- A clear and consistent approach to our teaching of phonics and early reading.
- Reading for pleasure is at the heart of our curriculum and we have a “Bassetts Reading Spine” which contains some key books which adults read to children. We have two library areas and every classroom has a book corner.
- Reading instruction is planned and comprehension skills are taught. Children also experience book talk to further develop their understanding of texts.
- Reading is taught within English where children read to develop their writing.
- Reading is a skill which is applied across the curriculum. The children have opportunities to read to learn.
- Support for reading at home.
How we teach Phonics and early reading
To teach early reading, we are following ‘Little Wandle, Letters and Sounds Revised’ which is a complete systematic synthetic phonics programme (SSP).
