Reading

Reading is the cornerstone to learning and a love of reading stays with us through life. At Bassetts Farm, we place great emphasis on reading, through teaching phonics, enjoying guided reading sessions and giving the children a wide range of books and materials to devour.

There are six key elements to our reading curriculum:

  1. A clear and consistent approach to our teaching of phonics and early reading.
  2. Reading for pleasure is at the heart of our curriculum and we have a “Bassetts Reading Spine” which contains some key books which adults read to children. We have two library areas and every classroom has a book corner.
  3. Reading instruction is planned and comprehension skills are taught. Children also experience book talk to further develop their understanding of texts.
  4. Reading is taught within English where children read to develop their writing.
  5. Reading is a skill which is applied across the curriculum.  The children have opportunities to read to learn.
  6. Support for reading at home.

How we teach Phonics and early reading

To teach early reading, we are following ‘Little Wandle, Letters and Sounds Revised’ which is a complete systematic synthetic phonics programme (SSP).
